Christmas! Happy New Year! - December 29, 2014

So I´m just about of time so this will be short and I´m just gonna explain a little bit about Christmas here in Chile. So they have this tradition at midnight that everyone goes out at midnight to look for Santa. However, he seems to slip away every year and they can never catch them. When they finally give up the hunt, they return to the house and sure enough Santa had already passed by and presents are under the tree. Cool stuff. Christmas eve is a lot bigger of a deal here. The people have a big dinner and they have all sorts of parties leading up to midnight. After the Santa hunt, everyone comes back to the house and opens up the presents right there. Christmas day itself is a lot more relax. After all the excitement of opening presents, everyone sleeps in and uses the day to enjoy the gifts that they were given.

Our Christmas eve we were with the Carillo Family and it was super fun. They have 4 kids Vania, Diego, Augustine, and Tommy. I got to play a little ping pong with Diego. He plays really well. I finally took a game on him but he was eating pan de pascua in one hand so it doesn´t really count lol. We had our Christmas dinner and then we had a family home evening which was super cool. We sang happy birthday to Jesus because that is a tradition they have in their family. We ate some cake and then it was time for the secret santa. I drew the name of Hermana Esther and Elder Ortiz drew the name of Vania there 17 year old daughter... Uhhh thats hard. But we found some purses in the feria and they seemed to like them. Augustine drew my name and he is about 11 I think. He got me a sweet looking read tie. It was great. After all that Hermano Carillo finally got home from work and we took a picture with all of us. I will be sending pictures next week. After that we had to run out the door because he it was practically 11 and we had to be in the house at 11. They also live in a pretty sketchy place so we didn´t want to walk through all of that with our laundry so we went the long way. Luckily we saw the exact bus that we needed was coming right as we were getting to the bus stop. So instead of walking we hopped on a very anxious to get home bus drivers micro and got home very quickly. Really a cool and neat experience.

Christmas day I got to talk to my family it was pretty much awesome. Nuff said.

Sunday we had a training meeting with our ward and I am so excited to work more with all of the leaders in our ward. They seem pretty excited too. I hope everyone has a great semana and that they take a little bit of time amongst all the new years celebrations to do those little things like scripture study, prayer and family home evening that make the biggest difference. Have a happy new year everyone! Oh yeah HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SISTER ALYSSA! She´s turning 15 again! Sorry guys she still can´t date.

Love,

Elder Shell

P.S. Elder Ortiz and I saw bishops daughter before the training meeting and she was sporting the purse that we had given to her for Christmas. Made me smile :) Just thought I´d let you guys know! Love that my family has such a desire to serve others :)

The Birth of Christ - December 22, 2014

Well this weeks email is gonna be a little bit different. Being that it is Christmas I want to change things up a little bit. Just know that I had a good week and nothing crazy happened lol. I decided this year to do some research on the birth of Jesus Christ and I´d like to share with you guys what I learned. I got my information from Jesus the Christ, a talk called The Spirit of Christmas by Howard W Hunter (I think), and an article called the 12 witnesses of Christ birth (have no idea who wrote it).  Anyways here goes nothing. Please excuse any typos.

I´m gonna start out with a lot of facts and details about Christ´s birth. It may seem like I´m jumping all over the place but bare with me. I promise that it will come together. Well I´m gonna try to make it come together...

First I thought I would explain a little bit of why we celebrate Christmas when we do. The actually date of the birth of Christ held by the church is April 6th of the year BC 1. So why then do we celebrate his birth on December 25th every year? Here´s a bit of history for ya. The actual commencement of a celebration during this time of year existed long before Christianity. The religion Mithraism worshiped a god named Mithra who was the god of Heavenly light and later in Roman times the god of the sun. This religion spread all over India and Persia. They had a festive season that began right after the the winter solstice which is the shortest day of the year. It´s significance was that after this day began the rebirth of Mithra (the sun). They celebrated this festival with big meals, gifts, gifts given to friends, and decorating their homes with evergreens. Overtime Rome took over these areas but Mithraism became very popular amongst the Romans. In Roman society they celebrated this holiday the 25th of December every year. Mithraism was the biggest rival of religion to Christianity. As Christianity began to win out, these festivities switched from a celebration of Mithra to the celebration of the birth of Christ. Then down through the years this now Christian celebration lasted the test of time to become one of the greatest Christian Holidays.

Now that we have a little bit of history, let´s switch our focus to the actual reason for the season. That is the birth of Christ. What were some of the requirements, for the coming of the Savior? Prophecies stated that Christ was to be born in the tribe of Judah. He was to be of the lineage of King David and of Abraham. He was to be born in the birthplace of David. It was told to Moses that he would come in the meridian of time. Each of these requirements that were prophecided of and held by the Jews as the circumstances of the Christ´s birth were completed.

So first, the lineage of Christ. Both of Christ´s earthly parents were actually of the tribe of Judah and of the lineage of David. Mary and Joseph were in fact cousins. In fact, had the Jews not fallen under Roman rule, Joseph the carpenter would have been the rightful king of Judah and Jesus of Nazareth his heir. We know that Joseph was not the actual father of Jesus as Jesus was the only person every born of an earthly mother begotten by an immortal father. However, this is not important in this prophecy because Jesus received the blood of David from Mary alone.

The Christ was to be born in the birthplace of David. This is known as the City of David which is Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth which is actually quite far from Bethlehem. At the time Christ birth there was a decree sent out by the Romans that all the world should be taxed. It was a census of sorts upon which the taxes of different people would be determined. The usual Roman method was to have people registered at their city of residence. However, Jewish tradition was to be registered in the city claimed by your family to be your ancestral home. Miraculously the Roman law respected this traditin and Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem. It was there that christ was born. It was nothing short of a miracle to complete this requirement. The timing was perfect.

Another requirement was that Christ would come in the Meridian of time. "Meridian as commonly used, conveys the thought of the principal division of time or space" Ever day the hours before noon are A.M. for ante-meridian. Ante meaning before. The hours after noon are P.M which stands for post meridian. Post meaning after. Just like noon is the meridian of every day, Christ birth has been used as the meridian for all time. B.C. stands for before Christ. A.D. is latin for "Anno Domini" which translate to "year of our lord." So all of the years after the birth of Christ are referred to as a "certain year of our Lord." Meridian also means the highest point or culminating point of anything. All of history culminated to the birth and life of Christ. Christ wa born in the meridian of time in either of those definitions.

For thousands of years Prophets prophecied of the coming of Christ. Isaiah prophecies specifically of the even of Christ birth two times (see Isa. 7:14 and Isa. 9:6). Both of these verses are quoted in the Isaiah chapters quoted by Nephi (see 2 Nephi 17:14 and 2 Nephi 19:6). Nephi saw the birth of Christ in a dream (1 Nephi 11:13-21). Lehi prophecies of the birth of Christ in 1 Nephi 10. During the actual time of Christ´s birth there were 12 who received a special witness of Christ´s birth. They didn´t necessarily see the birth of Christ. some of the witnesses received their witness a little before he was born and some a little after. They are Zacharias, the angel Gabriel, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph the Carpenter, John the Baptist, Simeon, Anna, the shepherds, wisemen, King Herod and a choir of angels. Being that you all understand how the majority of these people are witnesses to Christ´s birth, I will just explain a few that perhaps you aren´t familiar with or don´t see how they are a witness of the actual event of Christ birth.

So how was John The Baptist a witness of this event? We read in the scriptures that John leapt from within his mother´s womb when Mary talked with her cousin Elizabeth. Knowing yet within the womb that Christ was soon to be born.

Perhaps you do not know the story of Simeon. He was an older man who was promised that he would not die until he had seen the Savior. One day he was moved upon by the Spirit to go to the temple and there he beheld the Christ Child.

We read of Anna also being in the temple at this time. This devout and saintly woman also bore testimony of the Messiah when she approached the family in the temple.

You´re probably wondering how King Herod received a witness of the birth of Christ. I was too. Herod is more of a reluctant witness. The wisemen testified of the birth of Christ to King Herod. Being these were men of great wisdom, Herod gave their testimony credence and sent out the decree that all children  under two years of age were to be killed. Doing so he thus recognized that Christ had indeed been born.

Twelve different miraculous witnesses divine and human alike! They were not alone in the rejoicing of Christ´s birth. We read of the account of the faithful Nephites who believed the prophecies of the signs of the birth of Christ given by Samuel the Lamanite. They were threatened with death if the signs of Christ´s birth did not come. A day was set apart to kill the people who were believers. We rea in 3 Nephi 1:11-15, 21 that these signs did come and the people were saved.

There was so much conjecture, prophecy, and so many witnesses to this special event of the birth of Christ. And yet in all the commotion, and despite all of the excitement, and despite all of the events surrounding our Saviors birth, he was born one "silent night." The Savior of the world came into the world quietly in a remote stable that is believed to be in a limestone cave in Bethlehem and was placed in a manger. It was the start to the most important,,most amazing and most beautiful story ever told. Our Savior was born into humble circumstances while the world slept that silent night. His birth met every single one of those prophecies. Even as a babe, Christ was already saving lives. This simple quiety moment, that was currently unknown to the large majority of the world, Saved the lives of those faithful Nephites. A beautiful foreshadowing of what he would do for every single one of us.

I testify that Jesus Christ did indeed come to this earth. He came for everyone of us. He took upon the sins of the entire world,  he died and he was resurrected so that every single one of us can return to our Heavenly Father and live with our families forever in eternal happiness. Much like those Nephites of old if we are faithful, we will be saved. I testify that he is our Savior and he is the reason for this season.

In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

More BYU people in Santiago. Whaaat?? - December 15, 2014

There were two pretty cool days loaded with experiences this week and that is Saturday and Sunday so I´ll just talk about those two days. Also, Saturday night we got transfer calls and both Elder Ortiz and I are staying here in Renca 2.2. 3rd transfer together 4th transfer in Renca 2.2

Alright so Saturday was super cool for Elder Ortiz because he and Elder Nelson (AP when I got here) had two converts that were getting sealed in the temple. So I went and spent the day in Independencia with my good ole friend from the CCM Elder Norried. Their is apartment is on the 23rd floor of a huge apartment building which is kind of cool just saying. I definitely wasn´t in Renca. It was kind of a strange intercambio because we did a service project before and after lunch. Lunch took forever so we didn´t get out of the service project until like 5. WE did our language study and then it was time to eat dinner which is kindo of lame but President and Hermana Videla are pretty insistent on us taking an hour of dinner. But I got to eat McDonalds for the first time in forever (hehe frozen) and that Big Mac was glorious. Then when we were finally ready to go work, Elder Nelson called and they were almost back and it was time to go to the reception... But I got to meet Elder Nelsons parents because they came to get him from the mission cause he finished up this transfer and they got to see the sealing which was way cool. Getting to the wedding reception by micro was quite the adventure. Elder Nelson was a little bit late because he had another wedding of current investigators that was just a normal wedding. The best part of the day though was getting to talk to Elder Nelson for a bit one on one and just kind of say bye. This guy has really been an example for me here in the mission and I had to just say thank you. He just said "Elder Shell this isn´t how Heavenly Father shows that he is pleased with your work. This is the biggest blessing and the world and I am just lucky. There are plenty of missionaries that work just as hard as I do and never got to see this kind of stuff." He probably told me that three or four times and then he said something kind of out of the blue that I really needed to hear. "Elder when I got here I had a lot of expectations that I realized that I wasn´t going to reach. I had to regroup and find out what my real goal is and that is to do my best to invite and help everyone to return to the presence of God. Keep working hard, I know you´ll figure things out and trust me the blessings will come." So then all I could to was try and say thank you and give him a hug and tell him to say hi to Provo for me. Such a great guy and amazing example for me here in the mission.

Sunday we got to go to part of the temple Christmas concert with Alex. Before the concert I saw people from BYU like Cole Anderson and Kim Smith who I had no idea even was going on a mission but she was in the CCM. I also saw Phil Henderson from Georgia and at the end of the night I found good ole Elder Jensen. Kind of crazy the people you find when three of four santiago missions can go to this concert. Really cool to see people but kind of weird as well lol. I loved walking around the temple grounds with Alex and seeing all the lights. Then we had a member from the ward drive us home and it was kind of scarily awesome. Dude drives like a maniac and I´m pretty sure we broke 100. We got home quick though lol.

Kind of a short crazy week really but it was pretty good and ended amazingly. I am really excited to spend Christmas here in Renca 2.2 and excited to see what I can do with my Heavenly Fathers help with one transfer more. I am determined to be a hardworking servant of my Heavenly Father and to lose myself in his cause. The gospel is true and Heavenly Father truly loves each and every one of his children. Jesus Christ is our savior and his atoning sacrifice is for everone and it is truly truly amazing. Have a wonderful week and remember the reason for the season and I promise you will see his hand more in your life.

Love you all,

Elder Shell

PS Mom and Dad I honestly have no details about skype and what and when we can do it. President hasn´t said a thing. Just send me a time that you think would work best and I´ll make it work.

The Adventures of Getting your Visa - December 8, 2014

Tuesday all of the newbies met up at the office early in the morning to go on an adventure to get our visas. The adventure started out ok as I got to my first appointment in time and then we headed to the PDI which is like the FBI of Chile to get registered in their systems and what not. We took a number and I was number 506 and they were on number 150. So we knew we were in for a long wait. It was kind of cool though cause we met some missionaries from the Santiago South mission and one of them Elder Cheney knew a sister that finished her mission here in Renca. He and I got to talking and it was just really cool to get some advice from him and it was just a confidence booster for me. He was a really cool guy. Heavenly Father definitely puts people in our path to give us a little extra boost when we need it. So we were waiting outside and we heard that it was number 480 so we waited like 5 minutes and started to walk in and it was number 515... I don`t know how it jumped 35 numbers in such a short time when it took hours and hours to get through the people before that. I was like are you kidding me what are we gonna do... Some other missionaries had later numbers and they were good to go but for us they had stopped handing out numbers. I was like dang it I`m gonna have to come back and wait forever again how did this happen? But then I remembered Elder Farnsworth found another number in the 600`s in the street and put it on top of the vending machine. So I ran over there and IT WAS STILL THERE. So boo ya the numbers flew by and I got really really lucky and got to do my stuff that day. But there was still one last step we didn`t get to that day and Elder Prince and Elder Bullock (who has to renew his) didn`t get the stuff done at the PDI. So Thursday morning we got to the PDI again a little bit earlier since we didn`t have to do the first steps but we still drew numbers for Elder Prince and Elder Bullock in the 300`s. BUT then we saw Ricardo Contreras from the ward and we went over to talk to him and this lady that he works with. They help people who are moving to Chile to get their visa stuff done and THEY HAD DRAWN EXTRA NUMBERS. It was on number 50 and they gave us numbers 67 and 68. BOO YA! So we got in and out of their in about 30 minutes and passed our 300 numbers to the sister missionaries that were coming in as we were exiting so hopefully that helped them out a bit. We got to the last step got in some sort of express line and finished in like an hour. It was pretty much a day of miracles and I was stoked to be done with all of that nonsense. I kind of struggled with my finger prints but hey we all have struggles. I hope that story made sense...

Yesterday we FINALLY found this guy Dante and his girlfriend Maiyra that we had found a couple weeks back and failed to find the following weeks. Maiyra had actually done the reading we asked her to do and was wondering when we were gonna come back! We had a super awesome lesson about the restoration and when we gave the account of the first vision Maiyra was just like wow and kind of got the chills but I know she felt more than that. They really seem to enjoy having us over and they listen really well and participate a lot in the lessons so I`m excited to teach them more. It felt so so so good to get back to teaching new investigators.

On the sadder side of things. Guillermo plays his guitar in the bus system here in Santiago and he fell in the bus the other day and he has been in quite a bit of pain. We tried to visit a few times but his mom wants us to wait for him to recover a bit. Please keep him in your prayers. He`s in pretty rough shape it seems with his back.

I hope you all had a great Fast Sunday. I`d really just like to bear my testimony to all of you about the power of fasting. Fasting absolutely increases our ability to focus on those things that we are fasting for and it increases the power of our prayers. I truly am able to have a special experience every single fast sunday. I truly just feel at peace and I find myself able to express my thoughts more clearly and more sincerely to my Heavenly Father. I know that he hears and answers every single one of our prayers and that our ability to see those answers and understand what we need to do is increased as we fast. Love you all lots and I hope you have an absolutely great week.

It's Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas! - December 1, 2014

Honestly I don`t feel like writing a lot this week so I think I`ll just tell a couple of stories and share some thoughts.

So Wednesday we had a zone conference and it was amazing! We learned about the Christmas inciative of the church. During this time the Church has a new video out called "He is the Gift." Pretty much everything we are doing as missionaries around this time of year is centered in this video. We learned that the Church will have a big screen ad in Times Square new york of this video and that the Church will be the only advertiser on the homepage of youtube for an entire month starting December 7th. I cannot describe to you how I felt as I learned about all of this. It was such a motivation to me to see how we can spread our message during this time of the year. I can just see the contacts talking about it and the references coming and watching the video with members. I literally just can`t describe how I felt when I found out that so much of the world is going to see something so good. This video at www.christmas.mormon.org is a 2 minutes and 30 seconds of awesomeness. The spirit literally enters the room instantaneously when it starts. Jesus Christ is the gift of Christmas. I invite each and everyone of you to Discover your Savior, Embrace your Savior and Share your Savior during this time of the year. Share it with everyone and put in a little extra effort to think and learn of your Savior at this time of the year. The best give we can give anyone right now is a gift of hope and love that there is more to this life and God has a plan for us that was made possible through our Savior Jesus Christ.

Thursday I got going on the Christmas music first thing. I didn`t have celebrations to wait on to finish so I just got crackin. The Christmas music you sent me Mom is AMAZING! Love hearing you and the Uncles sing. And that vocal point arrangement of Emmanuel is so so so good. Definitely happy to start ringing in the season the best I can. Elder Ortiz and I put together the tree Mom sent me. We also found a tree in the house that was already decorated and Grammy`s presents were put under it so that I can open them on Christmas. Huge shout out for your package grammy! Those snickers peanut butters are my favorite you`re amazing! I`m excited to see what you got me for Christmas :)

Saturday was freaking cold and rainy and I was stoked out of my mind! It was cold and rainy in the middle of Summer! BOO YA! It really just started to feel like Christmas to me. I was cold and wet and couldn`t be happier. I think Elder Ortiz thought that I had lost my mind lol. But I was just stoked to feel a little bit of Christmas right then. I don`t think we really talked with anyone that day and we had one lesson with Patricio who is a recent convert but I didn`t care that the day was slow it was a stinking good day.

Sunday the Ward spent all of third hour arguing about how to clean the building and what not... Maybe it was a blessing that we didn`t have any investigators show up. Patricio came though but thankfully he left early before that meeting. Lunch was super super late and we didn`t get back to the house until like 4:30 so we decided to forgoe language study and work till dinner. That night we had a lesson with Alex and Carola with the video "He is the gift." Ricardo from the ward came and he did a really good job of being a friend to Alex and Carola. It was a short lesson but it was powerful. I really think that they are gonna try and discover, embrace and share the gift this Christmas.

I hope that all of you try to do the same this Christmas. As you get into the Spirit of Christmas I ask you to do it the right way and to do it through Christ. He is the season. The spirit that we feel this time of year can be felt year round as we embrace our Savior. Can you imagine if you lived every day like you did Christmas and Christmas Eve. Taking time to look out for others, enjoying your family, and remembering your Savior. I will say that this Spirit is extra special at this time of the year and it`s something very very hard to replicate all year long but I encourage you to try. But during this time while that Spirit is around I challenge you to share the gospel. It doesn`t have to be something deliberate. It can just be your example. I read a quote today that I loved. "Always live your life in such a way that those who don`t know Christ will want to know Christ because they know you." So during this time of year take this inciative upon yourself. As you personally discover and embrace Christ you will begin to share him naturally through the person that you are.

Love all of you tons,

Elder Shell

A Week with Lessons? Whaa???? - November 24, 2014

First of all I´d like to let you all know that Elder Ortiz didn´t have a single nosebleed this week! None that I saw anyways. We were blessed with a realitively cooler week this week and he seemed to do very well. I´ll apologize in advance for no pictures this week. We are trying a different internet this week and it turns out the software is too out dated to read my camera. Darn!

Anyways this week was really really awesome. So Tuesday I got to work on some family history stuff because we have to fill out this pamphlet about our families and what not. It was really fun to do actually and it was really cool to learn a bit more about all of my ancestors and their families. Shout out to my sidekick Aunt Karen who was the biggest help in the world! You´re the best Watson! That day we did a lot of walking and a decent number of contacts as well. Usually days like that seem super long but we were in good spirits and we just kept trucking. That night we had a lesson with Alex and Carola that went a bit long so we didn´t get around to try and visit Erika but that´s alright. Nothing special in the lesson but I felt good about Tuesday.

So Wednesday was when the crazy week started. After District Class we had a lesson with a recent convert Carlos Valdez. We read a chapter of the Book of Mormon with him and he really seems to be warming up to the idea of reading it again. So that was good and he is definitely warming up to us now he even smiles at me in church these days! After him we went to visit Mercedes to see how she was doing after the blessing we gave her last week. She was so excited when we stopped by and she just raved on and on about how almost immediately after we left the pain in her leg had left. She was just asking all sorts of questions about if it was bad that she couldn´t get to church and what not. We told her that it was alright because she literally can´t go but that we would try to find a wheelchair so we can take her someday. When we asked her if we could end with a prayer she said "Elders everything in this house is yours now do what you want" lol. She was happy to say the least. She is really old but really seems to have a lot of faith. If she keeps her commitments and we can get her to church maybe she´ll get baptized. We visited with Chano that afternoon. Kind of a tough visit. Dude is having a lot of problems with our bishopric and the church. Great guy but a little bit lost right now I think. I didn´t know how I was going to respond but I made a conscious effort to just keep listening. At the end of the lesson I had two talks come into my mind and I really felt guided by the Spirit which I was so thankful for. It´s not that it was an amazing lesson but I really felt like we were able to help him out a bit. That night we had a lesson with Alejandro who is the brother of Guillermo. It was kind of short. He seems to have more problems than his brother but you can´t count anyone out. We´ll see how the Spirit can work with him.

Thursday we visited Ruth in the afternoon. Her grandaughter is sick and she wanted us to give her a blessing. It´s interesting for an investigator to ask for that but I guess missionaries have given a blessing to someone in her family in the past. It was really cool because during the blessing and after that little girl was just so quiet and still and peaceful. Definitely a sweet spirit there. We had planned to go back over the plan of salvation with her. She has almost all the lessons but Elder Ortiz and I are the first to find her in quite some time. But the less active Maria that is her help started talking about a concert at the temple and next thing you know we taught tithing, eternal families, temples, and family history... That afternoon we went to visit a less active from the list. His name is Carlos Araya and he´s pretty old but he´s a super awesome member of the church. They had books from the church all over the place and they are sealed and everything. He just can´t come to church because of his health. That night we had a lesson about fasting with Alex and Carola and I felt that it went really well. There was another lesson that day but I don´t remember who.

Friday morning we visited Juan. We finally found an hour when his son in law isn´t there and we can actually visit him. When the son in law is there we can´t go in and visit him. That was a fun visit. Juan is a character. We went by and taught Mercedes and her daughter and grandaughter that afternoon. We talked about prayer. They´ve had lesson 1 a million times so we´re trying to take a little bit of a different route there. It was kind of lame at the end of the lesson because during my prayer her daughter and grandaughter were laughing and I have no idea why. Everything was kind of crazy there. That night we visited Maria Rojas. She is very busy with getting things ready for the move but she was happy to take some time out to visit with the missionaries. After that lesson we visited Camila and her mom Anaise. Anaise is a less active of many years. The missionaries have visited them before and we have been trying to find them for forever and we finally got in the door. Camila is super awesome and has had 1 Nephi 3:7 memorized since she was like 11 lol. She´s 17 now... She´s very smart and attentive so we´ll see what happens there. Anaise had just had an operation on her ear. Apparently it wasn´t too successful. :( She seemed to be in a bit of pain so we tried to be short. After Elder Ortiz shared his scripture, Anaise started talking about being grateful. Man the spirit was so strong. She definitely has an attitude of gratitude. Great day!

Saturday was quite the different start from the previous three days. We walked and walked and walked and walked... and walked. Everything fell through and man we were tired. But we kept trucking and kept reminding ourselves that we would get to chow down during once with Elizabeth and Pablo. Then guess who called to cancel... Yup Elizabeth and Pablo couldn´t do once with us that night. So we headed to the house and ate a bit and just sat down for our dinner hour. When we headed back out we went to visit someone who lives on the same street as Alex and Carola. As we turn on the street we hear music blasting and we see a huge white tent and a giant cake. Alex and Carola and allll of their family lives there and there were having a party. We were practically forced to sit down and eat some cake and when we asked what the occasion was they said one of the girl cousins had turned 5.... Leave it to them to through a huge party for someone who was turning 5 lol. After talking for a minute we reluctant got up cause we knew we had to get back to work. We went to visit this lady Patricia who is a past investigator. We haven´t taught her yet but we´ve passed by a few times. This time her son opened the door and we talked with him for a second. He´s a cool guy and much nicer than her husband who persistently slams the door in our face. His mom wasn´t there but he said we could come on in. He has a fairly new baby so we talked a bit about the plan of salvation. He isn´t very religious but he listens intently. So we found a new investigator and I am excited to see what happens there. Then that night we were able to teach the less active Family Osorio. We haven´t been able to get a hold of them since my first week with Elder Bullock. We had a great time getting to know them and there two boys are fun. They seemed pretty please that I tired out their youngest because as we got ready to leave he just laid on the floor and said he was ready for bed. It was fun! I´ve learned that whenever there is a really long day like that Heavenly Father just never leaves you out to dry. Everytime someone says no and everytime someone cancels you can just be more and more sure that there are blessings down the road.

Sunday we didn´t have really anyone in Church which was a bummer. We found out later Alex is sick again. But we had a lesson with Carmen who lives out in the boonies. We managed to be relatively short too which is a success because man does she like to talk. We had a short lesson..., I don´t even know if you can call it that with, with Guillermo. Then the week ended with Alex and Carola and her aunt and uncle as we watched the movie of the restoration of the church. I love that movie. Seems like that did too. The spirit was really strong. The aunt seemed to really like it but she lives a ways a way so no new investigators there. Either way great way to end the week. I could tell Alex really felt the spirit during that movie and that he has a stronger testimony now of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

I haven´t taught that much in my mission. It was kind of a whirlwind and I´m still trying to figure out what changed or what happened for that matter. There were still a fair sure of tougher moments during the week but this week just flew by and frankly I can´t remember much lol. I really know that if we just keep trying to do what is right that blessings will come. Some come immediately some later and some not until after this life but they come. This week I felt like it was raining blessings and I´m so thankful for that. I will leave you with this quote that I really like from President Harold B. Lee. "You must learn to walk a few steps ahead into the darkness and then the light will turn on and go before you." Have faith and trust in your Heavenly Father. He will not let you down.

Elder Ortiz, King of the Nosebleeds - November 17, 2014

So first of all I have some shoutouts to make. I realize I`m really bad about doing that but I`m gonna start trying to be better about that. So first up is my cousin Gabi! She`s getting married! Congrats on the engagement! I expect a cardboard cutout of me to be at your wedding being that I cannot attend. The other shoutouts are to Jasmin Roberts and Claire Wilkins for their mission calls. That is so great! Get ready for an amazing experience!

Alright so this week felt kind of short because everything was pushed a day back. So last Tuesday just wasn`t my day. I spent forever trying to figure out the ingredients to my mom`s cookies in Spanish. In the end there were two things that I just kind of guessed and hoped for the best. I spent pretty much my whole day cooking and making that batter. Let me tell you that mixing a double batch of cookies with no blenders is a pain and quite the work out. After I finally got everything all mixed well, I realized that I didn`t have chocolate chips. So we ran to a shop really close and bought a chocolate bar but it wasn`t enough chocolate. But I didn`t feel like going all the way to a real store to buy some. After everything the oven just wasn`t getting hot enough and the bottoms of the cookies were getting torched and the tops just weren`t cooking fast enough. We went ahead and ate them and the tops were ok but they just were nothing like my moms and definitely lacked chocolate. Kind of a bummer. Probably not gonna try that again any time soon because I didn`t get anything else done. On top of everything while I was running up the stairs I busted up my shin pretty good and not one but two pretty bumps there.

So Wednesday was awesome. District class and a package from my mom! Gotta love American snacks. We also managed to stay out of the sun and indoors by teaching some lessons! Nothing too special there. We`re visiting an older lady in our ward and her husband who isn`t a member. She can`t come to church and he doesn`t hear or see very well so we can`t really teach him too much. I don`t know how much he will be able to progress but either way I know they enjoy our visits and that`s all that matters. There names are Ninfa and Juan. Super awesome. We also taught Alex and Carola we`ve officially taught them every lesson so now we are reteaching some stuff a little bit more in depth. . We finished the day by teaching a less active Erika. Nothing super special with her but we are getting to know her better and she seems to be remembering more good memories with the church which is good.

Thursday we didn`t really teach anyone that I can remember. Kind of a tougher day. It was hot and we didn`t really teach that I can remember.

Friday was another really good day. We had lessons with Alex and Carola and I really felt like I was doing better at listening and focusing in on the people. We tried to be short with them so we could have time to visit some other people after them that said they would be there. Of course they weren`t and we walked to a couple other houses and then the idea came to me to go visit Guiermo. Remember the story of the drunk guy who is a singer and his mom is a less active member and his younger brother has some pretty severe disabilities? Yup him. We haven`t visited there in a while cause we can never find him there but sure enough we show up and he`s there. He`s like "I`m in the middle of eating but... come on in." Easy right? So his guitar is sitting out so I asked him to play some stuff for us. He had been drinking again but he didn`t seem too drunk yet. I was actually pleasantly surprised to find out he`s actually pretty good and I actually enjoyed listening to him. We had a short thought with him and I felt impressed to tell him that our message could change his life if he would let it. He told me that he`s pretty set in his ways but he`s willing to listen for the least. That`s all I can ask for! I know that if we can have a cool lesson with him and he feels the spirit that he will start to change some of his ways.

Saturday it was really cool cause I had another experience where I really felt like I was following promptings from the spirit. We were just doing our thing walking and the thought came to me "Carols Cardenes lives close to here right?" I look up and we are literally crossing over his street. So I`m like "lets go visit Carlos Elder Ortiz." We swing by and yet another house we can never get into has someone come out. It wasn`t Carlos it was his nephew but good enough. We got to talking with him and he was talking about how his grandma is in a lot of pain and that he wanted us to give her a blessing. So we got to go in and give a blessing to her. It was a really cool experience. It`s amazing how Heavenly Father just puts you in the right places at the right times.

Sunday we got to go to a baptism of an investigator that Elder Ortiz was teaching over in Cerro Colorado that is now getting baptized. He`s been involved with the church for 12 years! Elder Ortiz and Elder Pope baptized his daughter and then they got transferred. Well my mission dad Elder Bullock got transferred over there and Rey got baptized! Really cool thing for Elder Ortiz and for my mission papi. I was happy for the both of them. Sunday ended at Alex and Carola`s eating once and I just have to say that this was a good week.

Don`t have a quote this week cause I left the journal at home but I will say this. You can feel the spirit a lot more when you are happy. I`ve been so focused on making sure that I`m not doing things against the mission handbook and because of that I`ve been worrying and overthinking a lot of little things. I really tried to start focusing on the stuff that I can and should be doing this week. Like enjoying the people and my companion and just working. I was so much happier and in the shortest week of my mission we taught more lessons than I think I`ve ever taught in a normal week of the mission. It was a really cool lesson for me.

Love you all!

Elder Shell

P.S. Yeah I realized that I never explained the title of my email this week but Elder Ortiz has been having some gnarly nosebleeds. I mean they are pretty gross. He had about three on Friday and they are supposedly being caused by the heat. We talked to the wife of President and she gave us some advice and told us that less and less blood should be leaving every time. If more blood starts leaving than is right now he is gonna have to go see a specialist but that isn`t something he can do here so he`d have to go back to Mexico and probably just finish the mission early. I really hope that it quits and please keep him in your prayers.

BIGGEST SHOUT OUT OF ALL

Biggest shout out of all goes to my big sister, Sister Kirsten Shell. She is finishing up her mission here and she has been the biggest example to me and I know she was a truly consecrated servant of our Heavenly Father. The biggest shout out of all gets it`s own email ;) Love you to death Kirsten!

And they walked and they walked and they walked... - November 11, 2014

Last Tuesday we went and visited a less active member who we found in one of our list. We only talked with her once and she told us to pass by again so we were just kind of hoping she would be there. Luckily she was there and she let us come right in. Turns out that she has been inactive for quite some time but she her family and her parents were very very active in the church. I tried to put into practice a little bit of what I had learned from Alvaro and was pretty up front in asking why she left the church after we had talked for a bit. She told us a story and I really tried to think of what I could say to her but nothing was coming so I decided to do what I should have done from the beginning and just listened. She had a bad experience with a bishopric as her mom was passing away and it was just easier for her to walk away. Elder Ortiz responded first and then afterwards I knew I had to bear my testimony to her. I just kind of started talking and then as I talked my thoughts pieced together and I was really able to bear my testimony to her of eternal families and I really felt like we ended that visit with The Spirit. We knew her doubts right up front and now we know what we need to focus on and how we can help her come back to church. I truly feel that as you show people you love them that you can be a little bit more bold in your questions and in turn you gain their trust and are able to help them with their problems.

Wednesday Elder Ortiz and I got to teach in District Class about how we can use the Book of Mormon more effectively in the mission. It was a really cool topic to study and I learned a lot. We had to do a practice of committing a less active member to read the Book of Mormon in front of the whole class and it really helped me to hear what I am doing well and what the other missionaries noticed that I can improved. Overall I felt really good about our lesson. I thought it was fun for them because we made a human chair and tried to be interactive. We also met our new zone leader Elder Perez. Elder Macedo transferred :/ That afternoon we visited a recent convert Carlos Valdez. It was really cool cause his problem is that he isn´t reading the Book of Mormon. Exactly what we had studied and practiced in district class was able to be used just hours later. I felt like we did really well too.

Thursday morning was the morning of hilarious contacts. We were talking to this older gentlemen and he said that he was Catholic. Trying to put some of my sales training into action and be persistent I proceeded to resolve his concerns and "close" again to try to set up an appointment. I overcame about two concerns and then the old guy says "Actually I need to hospitalize myself" and I proceeded to offer help and then he just closed the door. I think I´m gonna use that excuse when I´m a bit older lol. We had another guy come up to us and he was drunk and proceeded to say that he knew English and had read the Book of Mormon. So I proceeded to ask him in English if he remembered the story of the bear with the magic unicorn horn. And directly after Elder Ortiz said in English (which is funny cause he speaks hardly any English) "you don´t even know English" and the man responded "yeah I´m from here in Renca." It was kind of funny to have a bit of fun but we were quick with him and told him it was a pleasure and that maybe we´d talk another day.  The last funny contact was a lady that was leaving her house and Elder Ortiz started to talk with her. She just said "Don´t bug me." Elder Ortiz was just like "Aww man your mad. That´s ok though because our message will help you be happy!" She didn´t seem too like that to much and just walked away. Later that day we got to visit a contact Jethro and visit with him. He´s really curious and seems really open to learning so I´m excited to see him progress. His dad came in towards the end and he wasn´t quite as open but a cool guy nonetheless

Friday was my first intercambio! (Exchanges) I went over to Cerro Colorado to spend the day with my Georgia boy Elder Millerd. He only has like 2 more transfers than me but we didn´t have a problem talking with anyone. In fact in the night we had an intense discussion with this investigator Mario that had some serious doubts about the Book of Mormon. In our discussion he got mad cause we always told him to ask God to know if the book is true.. Then when we tried to answer his questions he would just cut us off and keep talking and the answers we did get out he would twist and change to say we were saying something we weren´t saying. Finally quiet Elder Millerd started bearing his testimony with some power. I mean he really spoke up and I´ve never seen that guy talk loud but he really was bold in bearing his testimony. It was awesome. I was able to follow up and bear my testimony as well. Mario´s countenance really changed. I think he felt the spirit and doesn´t want to admit it. He still didn´t want to read but we ended the visit on good terms. It was really cool that two guys with not a lot of time in the mission field were able to understand everything that was going on in that situation and not be confounded by him.

Saturday we returned to the house and then we walked to Elder Prince and Elder Larson´s place to plan an activity. Then we walked to lunch and then we walked and walked and tried to talk to contact people and walked some more. And let me tell you it was stinking HOT! It was kind of a tough day. It´s really hard to keep going and working when it is so darn hot. We didn´t have dinner at 6:30 either cause we had an appointment at 7:30. We had 3 appointments we were sure were not going to fall through and yet they did. It´s easy to get down on yourself when things get tough like that. But we just kept trucking and I kept telling myself that the next miracle was around the corner. I had the feeling at sometime during the day that something cool was going to happen with the husband during Elizabeth during our once. I used that as my motivation and we just kept on walking. We finally made it to once and downed some cumpletos (loaded hot dogs) and got to talking with Elizabeth and her husband. He really opened up to us about some of the worries he has about his son Jorge. He feels his son is a bit confused. I was able to bear my testimony that the gospel was what could give his son direction. His son is a less active member and Pablo(husband to Elizabeth) isn´t a member. During our visit an old missionary skyped them and they absolutely adore him and they loved listening to him. Even though he isn´t a member Pablo really likes this missionary. At the end of the call Elder Veron bore his testimony about eternal families to Pablo. Man the spirit was strong and I could just see Pablo taking him seriously and his heart softening. We were able to share a thought on top of that and we left feeling really good. Miracles are happening there.

Sunday was the primary program for us too and it was freaking awesome! It really impresses me the absolutely surety that these kids have in their testimonies. They just don´t doubt that it is true. Just another reason Christ tells us to become like a Child. That afternoon we met with a contact Carmen. She talks more than anyone I´ve ever met. We would ask her questions to bring her back on topic and she would sort of answer and then go on some tangent. I will definitely learn how to listen and be pacient in my mission. We finally got out of there and then our once appointment with Chano (less active) fell through and so we just worked through till 8 and ended our day with our hour of dinner. Then we tried to get to bed early cause we had to get up early for the conference with Elder Nelson.

So yesterday I don´t have a lot of words. There truly is a special spirit that enters when an Apostle of Jesus Christ enters the room. I got to shake his hand and his wife told me that I have a great name. I had a half heart attack because Elder Nelson double looked at my plaque and I thought it was twisted up or something but it was fun and he was just making sure he read my name! I learned a ton in that conference. It was just awesome. I was really comforted as he left his blessing on the missionaries and he specifically left a blessing of health which was comforting for me cause I get nervous a lot when I eat now. The rest of the day we didn´t have planned because we thought the conference was supposed to go a lot longer. We were like Nephi going forth not knowing before hand what we were to do. Elder Ortiz kept joking that a drunk dude was gonna pass out in front of us any second. We got to visit Maria Rojas and Alex. It was a really great day and I felt good.

Bit longer of an email this week. I´ll leave you with this quote. "Every temptation and every opposition happens for one purpose only: to give you opportunity to respond by applying in your life the teachings of Jesus." Lawrence Corbridge. Life gets tough sometimes people. But when you have trials think of how you can apply the gospel of Jesus Christ more in your life. What would Jesus do? Think of that and I promise you will find your answers and direction and comfort.

Love you all,

Elder Shell

Tomato Sauce... NEVER AGAIN! - November 3, 2014

Monday we went over to Elder Prince and Elder Larsons for some chicken alfredo and barbeque chicken pizza courtesy of them. It was super tasty and really fun. That night we had an FHE (family home evening) with Alex and Carola with the company of Alvaro Quijara. It was super great lesson and all. We topped off the night by play the Shell classic animal game. I attempted to play the shoe game too but I couldn´t explain the trick to Alvaro well enough and it didn´t work out as well. Super fun nonetheless. I also got a talk from Elder Larson called "The 4th kind of Missionary." WOW. Just wow. It talks about how for us to really benefit from the mission we have to give everything to the Lord. All of our hopes, dreams and desires that we had at home we need to give up for this little bit. It really just talks in detail about how we can truly lose ourselves in the work and align our will with our Father in Heaven´s will. As I thought about this talk and I thought about my efforts out here I realized that for whatever reason I have been witholding part me from the work. I haven´t truly given him everything and lost myself in the work. I have more to give but I can only give it as I give him my heart. Everything else he already has. The only thing he doesn´t have is our heart and our will and it´s the only gift we can really give to him and as we do so he will help us give more than we ever thought we could. That night I really prayed to let my Heavenly Father know that I was giving him my heart and my will.

So Tuesday we headed out to Jose Miguel Infante to pick up Elder Macedo who was gonna come on exchanges with both Elder Ortiz and I. We came back to our sector and started out by talking about our area. He was truly an answer to many prayers in helping me know what I can be doing and what things I can be using to find more investigators and work better with the members. Tuesday was Elder Princes birthday so we headed over that way after studies and decorated their apartment and what not. (Elder Macedo has keys). So that was a fun little party and then we ate some noodles with tomato sauce... Anyways we finally got to work after lunch and I was starting to feel terrible again. We finally got a hold of Fallon and we had to leave early because I was going to throw up. So that was the rest of Tuesday. Sick as a dog and finally since it was the second time in 2 weeks we decided to take a trip to the hospital. Elder Macedo gave me a priesthood blessing before we left and I just had such a since of comfort and actually felt better and was able to get to the hospital no problem. In the hospital they told me that tomato sauce is toxic if you are accustomed to it here and that is indeed what I had eaten both times that this has happened. So that was great. What wasn´t great was going through 5 stinking bags of liquid, with an IV in my arm and being in a bed not being able to move much for 4 hours. I just about lost my mind. Funny story I didn´t actually throw up until I get to the hospital and then I threw up a few times. Anyways, after all the bags, we left the hospital at 2 in the morning and got back to the house. Our exchange with Elder Macedo went a little longer than planned. I was exhausted and finally threw up one more time during the night and that was it.

Unfortunately I had to get up in the morning (wednesday) and take a taxi to district class but Elder Larson gave me some gatorade and crackers which was nice. After district class Elder Hyer (other zone leader) said that he had permission from the AP´s to talk to me in English for a bit. So we sat down and we just talked. He has been noticing that we have a ton in common and wanted to talk to me. Now I don´t need to put the details of the conversation but it was truly an amazing experience and despite everything that happened I was more motivated than ever to work. Now the rest of the day I just slept in the house but in my time to think I really thought about what had happened. I was thinking at the beginning of the day. "Really? After I told Heavenly Father I´m giving my heart and will to him this is the first thing that happens." But as I thought about it I thought about the talk. In order for us to truly give ourselves to the Lord we have to be humble and I needed this experience to finish breaking me down so that Heavenly Father could begin to build me back up. That is truly what happened and that process started out immediately with that talk with Elder Hyer. I truly truly felt motivated and happy despite everything.

Thursday was back to work. Nothing special but I was feeling a lot better and the bajillion pills I had to take seemed to be helping.

Friday we had an activity with the stake where the priests were supposed to go out with the missionaries. Well there wasn´t enough priest so I went out with a returned missionary from Brazil who served in a mission a little bit south of South Paulo but I don´t remember the name. His name is Alvara. Holy cow Brazil must breed some good missionaries because we freaking killed it and I learned so much. He is very direct and bold in a way but he has such a good fun loving spirit about him that the people feel comfortable with talking and answering his questions. He gave me tons of references cause he lives in our ward and we contacted half of them. We also had like 2 new investigators that day and 3 lessons with a member. Just another blessing as Heavenly Father is shaping me into the missionary that I need to be. I am truly learning from the examples he is placing in my life.

Saturday I started my fast and taught Jose Luis the first lesson which was great. It´s been a while since I´ve taught a legit legit lesson like that so we were a bit rusty. Definitely stuff to improve but overall it was a pretty good lesson. Jose Luis is a super awesome guy and I think that he´s really gonna keep his commitments and be baptized. That´s about it for Saturday

So Sunday was truly an amazing experience for me. It was just amazing that all of the things that I did, my thoughts, and the things that I was fasting for all seemed to be intertwined. I truly felt the spirit guiding my thoughts as I came to a few conclusions. The first conclusion is that if I want to give myself fully for these two years to my Heavenly Father I need to pray more. I need to pray in every moment that I can and come to truly rely on my Heavenly Father and trust in him. I´ll share with you at the end of this letter a few more of my thoughts. The rest of Sunday was contacts and we found two new investigators Dante and Myra and we got to sit down with them for a second. The other awesome part about church was that EVERYONE FREAKING CAME! Alex and Carolda, Patrico and Fallon and Brian and (they even brought Elias and cute little Martin which I´ve never seen), and Elizabeth and Jorge. Elizabeth and Jorge are some inactives that I visited with Alvaro and we committed them to Church and they came. Truly a great great great day and really spiritually rejuvinating for me. Pardon my spelling I can´t hardly spell in English anymore.

Alright so my last two thoughts that I´ll live you with are some of the things that came to my mind during my fast as I thought about the person I want to become. The first is this. "Everything worthile in this life (everything truly important and righteous) is a process. That is why the virtues of patience and diligence are so important." The combination of patience in diligence gurantees success in my mind. You need both together though. What good is patience if you aren´t doing anything to deserve what you are being patient for? What good is diligence if you aren´t going to be patient in trusting that your work will pay off? The second thought is this. "Live in the moment with hope for the future." Don´t be like Walter Mitty and spend all day dreaming about the past or about whatever thing. Do as my man Hitch says "When you're in the room be in the room." Don´t miss out on life and the special moments that come with it because you aren´t living in the moment and taking everything in. The second part is super important though. Our present circumstances may not be the best and we may have had some great memories in the best BUT we have to have hope for the future and trust that our Heavenly Father does have more in store for us whether it be now or whether it be in the eternities. These are two things I am going to truly try to implement into my life.

Love you all and I hope you have the best week ever.

Caught Elder Ortiz sleeping!

The Lord Always Keeps His Promises - October 27, 2015

Usually after I finish writing emails I like to look up a talk to print out and read during the week. Last Monday I had a talk all picked out to read and then for some reason the internet in the library went out and the printer wasn´t working and I couldn´t print one out and I was super bummed. But then I got a letter from my Dad this week and it had two talks in it! Such a small thing but it was a huge blessing to me. My dad´s kind of awesome in case you guys didn´t know

So Tuesday we finally got to teach Patricio and Fallon. They are recent converts and haven´t been to church in over a month. They have a really busy schedule and it´s hard to find them in the house. The lesson itself was alright but what made it a really good visit was when we started to talk with them afterwards about their thoughts. It was such a cool experience because I listened to what they were telling me I just knew what to say. I wasn´t really thinking at all I was just talking and I know that it was the spirit guiding my thoughts. I was able to think of everything I had read in talks and scriptures and what I had read in my personal study that day was one of the things that I felt they needed to hear. I had a similar experience with Alex and Carola that night. We were teaching them about how to have a family home evening. We were just kind of throwing the lesson together on the fly and for the first part I felt like it wasn´t the best lesson. But then at the end of the lesson again I really just felt the spirit guiding my thoughts. I don´t really remember exactly what I said but I felt like the lesson ended really well and they were super excited to have an FHE the following week (today). There are countless scriptures that promise that if you listen to people and are pondering the teachings of the gospel throughout your day that Heavenly Father will help you know what to say through the power of the Holy Ghost. I know this promise to be true. D&C 82:10 says "I the Lord am bound when you do what I say but when ye do not what I say ye have no promise." If we do our part Heavenly Father will always hold up his end of the bargain.

Wednesday I learned a ton in District Class. During our practice I was kind of struggling to apply the points of the lesson to the need of my investigator. We were practicing lesson 1 and I was like how am I supposed to apply the apostasy (when the authority of Heavenly Father was not on the earth) to problems with drugs and alcohol. Throughout my struggles Elder Hyer said "You´re like me, a perfectionist. In time your gonna be just fine." What stuck out to me was the first part. If you know me, you would never think that I was a perfectionist. Heck, I´ve never thought that of myself but as I thought about it that is something I have been finding out about myself out here. I really want things to do things exactly right and because of that I overthink stuff A TON. I´m really finding out a lot about myself out here that I had no idea existed. Anyways the practice actually ended really well. Elder Hyer showed me an example and I really felt like I got better at applying the points of the lessons to the needs of my investigators.

So Thursday I had another slap of humility in the morning as I practiced teaching more with Elder Ortiz. I felt like at the beginning of our practice I was doing really well with asking lots of questions but as I found his need and started into the lesson I just talked and talked and talked. At the end of the practice he was like not gonna lie you bored me. Just another reminder that I have a lot of work to do with my teaching. I´m trying to be very spiritual all throughout the lesson and people definitely need to feel the spirit but they need to be paying attention to feel the spirit when your bear testimony. So that´s something I´m working on a lot now. I need to be more animated in my lessons and ask more questions so that when it´s time to bear testimony they will feel the spirit. The rest of Thursday was hot hot hot and a lot of walking. We didn´t teach anyone until the night time and that was just a little chat with Alex and Carola to see how they were doing.

Friday we didn´t find anyone all day until we saw Bernarda in the street and she bought us some popsicles and we had quick lesson with her. Definitely was working on my missionary tan Thursday and Friday. That night for dinner we decided to order pizza. Problem was that they didn´t have anyone running deliveries so we had to go to the pizza place to pick it up. At the pizza place while we were waiting these two Chilean guys challenged us to some fusbol. We played a quick game to 5. We were down 4 to 3 but then I scored two quick goals for the come back win. Kind of fun to play fusbol again. It´s been a while but that win goes out to my college boys in Building 9 :P That night we were exhausted and it was 9:10 and it was a ten minute walk from the house it was tempting to just go home but we knew we had to try for one more person. On our walk there who else was to pull up and offer us a ride to our destination than our good buddy Chano. We were dead beat and it was the biggest blessing in the world to get a ride to the house. Vanessa wasn´t there but I felt really good about pushing the last little bit and very grateful for the blessing Heavenly Father gave us for pushing the last little bit.

Saturday we knocked an apartment complex and ran into this guy about our age named Felipe. He was like "what´s up?" Elder Ortiz just says "Can we come in and talk with you about Jesus Christ?" And He was just like yeah why not. It was kind of funny how quick it happened. Felipe is atheist and he asked me a question in English cause he´s studying English in school. "Why should I believe?" He was a super nice guy and he was open to learning and he posed a really good question. After the question in English the rest of the conversation was in Spanish. As I really listened to him as we talked I really just felt the Spirit guiding me again. We actually had a really cool visit and we are going back next week. I really think that we might be able to have some success with Felipe. We walked all over creation. Literally one end of our sector to the other to try and find an open internet place after the lesson so we could print our informe de progreso and nothing was open. Kind of lame to show up to coordination with no informe but it happens.

Sunday was really cool. Again we only had one lesson. It was with Brandon and lessons with him are kind of like beating your head against a brick wall. He just isn´t keeping any of his commitments. He's been baptized for about a year now and at the end of the lesson he needed a reminder of how to pray. I´m praying really hard to figure out how we can help him. Regardless I felt really good about this week because we did our contacts all week. I have never met my goal for contacts for the week until this week and it felt so good. We also got more reference than we have ever had. Sure we aren´t finding people at home but I feel really good in the fact that we are doing our part in trying to find people.

My quote this week is from Jim Rohn and I´ve probably shared it before but I love it. "The ultimate reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them." Really that is why we make goals as missionaries and as people. The mission and really life is about becoming. I know that as we set righteous goals and truly strive to reach them that we will become the person Heavenly Father wants us to be and that is a more Christlike person.

Love all of you,

Elder Shell

A Peek into the Mind of Elder Shell - October 20, 2014

So last Monday ended with the usuals. Weekly planning and then we went to see if we could visit Zoila´s family but there wasn´t a guy home so we just talked to her for a minute outside. It was kind of cool because I had the prompting to ask her to sit with Alex and Carola on Sunday´s during sacrament meeting to give them a little bit of help with the kids. She´s in the primary and loves kids. I´d never thought of it before but it seemed like a good idea!

So Tuesday our appointment with NoĆ© fell through and that was kind of a bummer. We also had an appointment for once at 8 so we worked through dinner and that always makes the days a bit tougher but I always feel better having more time to work. We got a hold of Denise finally and got to sit down with her. Turns out that she was present in a lot of the discussions with the missionaries when her sister got baptized. This was 4 years ago or so. She remembers some of the stuff but has forgot a lot as well. I am super excited to teach her. I think that she is really ready to hear the gospel. Tuesday night was kind of heart breaking. We went to Alex and Carola´s house and Alex told us about how he had gotten in an argument with his boss at work and stuff and he wasn´t in the best mood. Elder Ortiz called an audible and instead of teaching the last part of lesson 5 he talked about repentance. After we left the house, he told me that he smelt alcohol on Alex. That really took some wind out of my sails. Alex had bought herbal tea and this ecco stuff which is like an replacement for coffee that´s supposedly ok and had been doing so well with the word of wisdom and so that was tough. But, we´ve got time to work with him and I know that with some prayers and diligence he´ll come around if alcohol is a problem with him.

So Wednesday was Zone Conference! It was a lot more fun this time around when I understood more and got a lot more out of the lessons. It´s always good to see some of the people from the CCM and meet some new people as well. The lesson that stood out the most to me was the lesson from our Zone Leaders. They just talked about the transition it has been for some of the other Elders with a new president and all and talked about how maybe some of them were losing a bit of motivation or excitement. The lesson was so inspired though and there were things that I needed to hear too so that was awesome. As always it´s super cool to hear the testimonies from the Elders and Sisters that are finishing there mission. We visited Chano´s family that night and were waiting for Chano to get there to teach a lesson but he got there just in time to drive us home for the night...

Thursday started out really well and ended kind of terrible. In the morning I was feeling really good and we had a decent amount of contacts and I felt like it was gonna be a really good day. Then we got home from lunch and I felt terrible. I just slept through language study and I never do that but I just felt bad. I must of had food poisoning because for the rest of the day I was either laying on the couch miserable or in the bathroom miserable. At about 10 o´clock I had thrown up for a second time and was laying on the couch. I called for Elder Ortiz and asked him to give me a blessing. I was still pretty nauseous and it wasn´t to fun to sit up but I´m glad I did. I´m almost positive I was looking forward to a sleepless night but I kid you not within minutes of the blessing I passed out on the couch and woke up and it was like 9 am. Power of the priesthood is real.

Friday I was absolutely exhausted and had nothing in me. We just chilled in the house all day and that´s no fun. Elder Prince and Elder Larson came over for lunch and they´re always good for a laugh and lifting my spirits. I had some really cool studies that day. That night I just started thinking a lot about memories that really stood out to me with my family. As a missionary that is dangerous because it can lead to losing focus and what not and getting trunky. But I just went upstairs and watched the restoration video and then I watched another video called "Together Forever." It was an older video but I absolutely loved it! As I watched the video I had an awesome testimony building experience. I realized that all of the memories that stood out to me about my family were really wholesome experiences that happened in my life because we had the gospel in our home. My family is such a motivating factor for me on my mission. My family makes me so happy and I know that I have the opportunity to live with them forever and that´s why I´m here. To share with others something that I know will make them and the families happy.

Saturday we had a service project at a dog shelter and everything was all fuzzy in my left ear. I don´t know whats up. I have tried to pop it over and over but it´s been weird for 3 days now. Not cool. We had lunch with the Valencia Jara family and that´s always awesome. But Hermano Nelson asked me something about how much it would cost to buy a Washington Redskins jersey cause I found out that´s his football team. Thought that would make Grandpa Jack happy. Having the overthinking mind that I do this question sparked an inhead debate and crisis about something that has about 0 importance. I had no idea whether I was a Falcons fan or a Redskins fan. I would tell myself that I could like both but then absurd questions would pop into my head like "but if you wanted to buy a jersey which team would you want it for." I finally convinced myself that it wasn´t important but yeah that´s my mind for ya... It doesn´t take much to send my head spinning in a meaningless debate of thoughts. So we went to see Jose Luis but he said to come by on Sunday but then he wasn´t there Sunday either so that was kind of a bummer. We visited the Araya Teyo family in the night and that was awesome. We got to meet the mom and talk with her more. She is super cool. She seems like she wants to come back to church. I think that they´re ready to become active again and for their daughter Amanda to be baptized!

Sunday we went to ward council in the morning which was new but I liked it! We did a lot of walking and didn´t get a hold of anyone all day. It was close to dinner and we decided to go contact a reference really quick before dinner. We didn´t know the exact address but we had the gist and planned to knock on a few doors until we found her. Well the first door we knocked on was not our reference but she invited us in! Her house was huge! And it turned out that she owned the school across the street... I felt like I was in that fairy tale where the boy enters the house and he eats to much and then he can´t leave. This lady just kept bringing out food. "Oh try these empanadas, oh here´s some hot chocolate, oh here´s some home made jam and bread." One more thing and Elder Ortiz was gonna have to roll my out of the place. We didn´t get a hold of anyone else but I was happy to have gotten to talk with Magnolia and her husband. I don´t know how well they will progress as investigators but I know we found them for a reason so we´re gonna teach them!

This week was kind of a tougher one but I actually learned a lot and had some really cool ideas and promptings from the spirit and my testimony was strengthened. Love being a missionary and love all of you!
